Natural Extension
A sun-filled addition that brings family together
Simon and Lee-Ana’s family was growing – and so was their need for space. But rather than starting from scratch, they chose to build on what they already had: a character-filled home in Whanganui with a generous backyard and great bones. The result is a thoughtful, 100m² extension that feels like it’s always been there. A natural continuation of the original home, designed to let in light, connect with the outdoors, and support the rhythms of everyday family life.
Design with intention
The brief was simple but impactful: more space, more sun, and better flow. The extension includes a new kitchen, dining and living area that opens directly onto an outdoor entertaining space, plus a master bedroom, ensuite, and laundry.
North-facing orientation maximizes light and warmth, while mature trees provide natural shade. Materials were chosen for durability, comfort, and low maintenance, with recycled weatherboards from the original house used to reduce waste and honour the home’s history.
Built to perform
The project uses high-performance insulation, VOC-free paints, FSC-certified timber, and sustainable adhesives to create a healthy, energy-efficient environment. Colorsteel roofing and Hawkes Bay profile weatherboards ensure resilience in Whanganui’s climate, while Rhino carpet and vinyl flooring balance comfort and practicality.
Though not Passivhaus-certified, the extension follows many of its principles. Good airtightness, passive solar design, and smart spatial planning all contribute to lower energy use and long-term sustainability.
This home is proof you don’t need to start over to build something meaningful. Sometimes, the best way forward is to grow what you already have.
